Barbour coats and clothing
J. Barbour & Sons, founded by John Barbour in 1894 originally supplied local fisherman, sailers and dockers with waterproof oil skin garments to protect them from the bitter elements out at sea.
Established in South Shields, John's company built a reputation for making exceptionally well made overalls and soon broadened its client base. By 1904 landowners and farmers were now in demand for the breathable yet waterproof garments.
In the first and second world wars, Barbour were asked to provide overalls for the British army and in world war II, the all in one Ursula suit became a standard issue to the submarine service.
By the 1950's, Barbour were now producing overalls for motorcycle enthusiast's and created the now iconic International trials jacket. This jacket was worn by virtually every rider at the six day international trials circuit throughout the 50's, 60's and 70's.
Barbour has been rightfully recognised for producing high quality products and received its first Royal Warrant issued by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1972. Further Royal Warrants followed from Her Majesty the Queen in 1982 and The Prince of Wales in 1987 making Barbour one of the few brands to hold three Royal Warrants.
