“Uniform of the streets since 2003”

Today marks the date of Yohji Yamamoto’s 75th birthday.

Yohji is a world renowned innovative Japanese designer. He’s become a household name for creating garments in an Avant-Garde style; ingeniously incorporating Japanese dressmaking with a more Western everyday casual wear. He incorporates oversized cut garments, long draped fabrics, including shirts and knitwear with wide trousers. These form the foundations of his style, whilst he simultaneously merges elegance with comfort.

Yohji started his brand in 1972 and debuted his first collection back in 1977 in Tokyo, which later debuted in Paris in 1981.

22 years later in 2003 we saw the launch of Y-3. The iconic collaboration between high end fashion and sportswear, which unknowingly at the time went on to cement the foundations of futuristic sportswear. The ‘Y’ represents Yohji Yamamoto’s Influence, the ‘3’ represents sportswear giant Adidas’s iconic three stripe logo and the ‘-’associating the link between the two brands.

Y-3 incorporates Yohji’s Innovative designs and Adidas’s athletic legacy to create performance driven craftmanship, fusing high fashion with advanced sportswear.

At Philip Browne, we have stocked Y-3 since its first collection. We’ve seen first-hand how Y-3 has pioneered an amalgamation of sports functionality, technical fabrics, fashion elegance and innovative designs since its inception 15 years ago. Looking at current trends and how popular collaborations have become, it epitomises the true relevance of this partnership and how it has influenced other collaborations with high end fashion designers; such as the collections alongside Rick Owens and Raf Simons.

The current AW18 collection stays true to Y-3’s roots, lots of dark tones of blacks mixed with navy blue and a very bright yellow, which has quickly become the stand out colour of the season. They have incorporated another signature floral story, a tip of the hat to seasons gone before. You will also find Yohji’s love of draping silhouettes within the long scarves, as well as the technically inspired diamond quilted Primaloft over shirts, epitomising the way in which Y-3 fuses sports functionality with style.

Y-3 are renowned for their footwear, discovering a unique equilibrium that joins apparel and shoes, mediating the harmony between the two within a complete look. The Kaiwa trainer is one of the newest additions to their powerful roster of trainers, composed by mixing neoprene with leather and suede. The end result is a a futuristic and artistic approach to a running trainer, whilst still maintaining functionality.

We have composed a look book to commemorate Yohji Yamamoto's work, selecting key pieces from his AW18 Y-3 collection.

To celebrate Yohji Yamamoto's 75th birthday and 15 years of Y-3, exclusively at Philip Browne we are offering 25% off all AW18 Y-3 footwear until midnight (BST) on Saturday 6th October 2018.
